Current Situation in the Red Sea

The situation in the Red Sea has worsened drastically over the last weekend due to attacks on several merchant ships.

The recent Houthi attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea have led the shipping companies CMA, Maersk, MSC and Hapag Lloyd to announce an immediate suspension of shipping traffic via the Red Sea. It can be assumed that other shipping companies will follow suit in the short term and avoid the area in the Red Sea.

It is currently still unclear whether the ships will initially anchor and wait for the situation in the Red Sea to calm down, or whether there will be a detour of ships via the Cap of Good Hope. In any case, further delays to the ships are to be expected due to the situation described. A re-routing via the Cape of Good Hope would mean that the ships would need an additional 10-14 days to reach the North Continent Ports (Rotterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp, Bremerhaven, etc.).

Due to the above-mentioned events in the Red Sea, the already tense situation will deteriorate again. Further increases in freight rates and the introduction of a peak season surcharge are to be expected. In addition, delays due to rerouting cannot be ruled out.

We are currently unable to provide any detailed information on the level of freight rates in January - however, it is already clear that rates will rise sharply in January and that the space situation will continue to worsen. Particularly in view of Lunar New Year, it is advisable to plan ahead and book early.
